What is BC Hydro’s Smart Metering Program?
Smart meters, like power lines and poles, help deliver electricity to homes and businesses. They are a necessary part of our electricity system. BC Hydro is installing 1.8 million new meters on homes and businesses across the province by the end of 2012.
The new smart metering system measures the flow of electricity through the entire provincial electricity system; measures the quality of power, such as voltage, being delivered to homes and businesses; records consumption data on an hourly basis; and, automatically detects power outages.
The new meters will help BC Hydro get the lights back on faster and more safely in the event of an outage; they will provide people with tools to manage their energy use and save money; and they will help us keep our rates low by reducing waste and other costs.
Smart meter installation
Smart meter installations are underway in Abbotsford.
All customers will receive advance notification that smart meters are coming to their community, including a letter from BC Hydro a few weeks prior to their installation date notifying them of the exchange. Installation will be simple and will only take a matter of minutes, and in most cases customers will not need to be home.
