Campus to Commerce connects Abbotsford businesses with the in-house research capacity of the University of the Fraser Valley’s students and faculty to find solutions to small business issues.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Abbotsford, B.C.) September 16th, 2025 – The Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce and the UFV Centre for Experiential and Career Education (CECE) launched a new initiative, “Campus to Commerce,” following the inaugural address of UFV President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. James Mandigo at the Chamber’s Leaders Lunch at the Abbotsford Centre today.

Campus to Commerce offers local businesses the opportunity to tap into research-backed problem-solving at no cost. By partnering with UFV, businesses gain access to student teams guided by expert faculty who take on real business challenges as part of their academic work. The result is practical insights, tailored recommendations, and a fresh wave of innovation. Examples include market research, customer insights, workflow mapping, and sustainability assessments.

“Abbotsford business owners are lucky to have a world class educational institution right in our backyard. It’s like having a research and development department working on your behalf, fueled by student energy and supported by academic expertise,” said Alex Mitchell, CEO of the Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce. “This initiative strengthens the ties between industry and education while helping local businesses explore new solutions, unlock innovation, and support the next generation of Fraser Valley talent.”

Why Businesses Should Participate:

  • Built-in Research Capacity: Access student energy, skills, and creativity, backed by UFV faculty.
  • Fresh Ideas: Get objective, innovative thinking that sparks new approaches.
  • Tailored Solutions: Your business challenge becomes the focus of a structured, community-engaged research project.
  • Community Impact: Help train the next generation of professionals while advancing your own business.
  • Low-Risk, High-Reward: Someone else explores your problem while you stay focused on your day-to-day.

How It Works:

  • Identify a Challenge: Whether it’s a problem, opportunity, or a big question.
  • Submit Your Challenge: Fill out a short online survey to get started.
  • Get Matched: UFV connects you with a student team and faculty lead.

“This is a win-win for our region,” said Larissa Horne, Experiential Education Coordinator at CECE. “Students gain meaningful, hands-on experience, and businesses receive actionable solutions rooted in research. Together, we’re building stronger businesses, deeper connections, and a more resilient Fraser Valley economy.”

To connect with UFV problem-solvers, submit your business challenge through the short online Campus to Commerce survey.
